It is a pretty common use case to open/save documents on an external USB drive.

+1 for auto-connecting removable-media for the very reason given in the original post (documents are often transferred using USB drives and similar)
+1 from me too. This seems like a completely sensible request. I frequently load presentations from USB when at an event.
+1 for me, completely reasonable to access content from removable storage.
