Wickrme fails to open on Linux Mint - Aborted (Core Dumped)

Hello,

A similar issue to this raised its head a while ago - in fact I think Wickr even posted something on their website about it at the time.

Starting Wickrme from the menu results in absolutely nothing. Starting from the terminal results in an error “Aborted (Core Dumped)” and a graphical window for Wickr kinda begins to appear and then vanishes.

I’ll come back and post the full output in a little while, but I recall there was another error in the terminal output "Failed to load module … "

Last time this similar issue happened I got round it by reverting to the Candidate version which worked fine and then waited for the Stable version to update, and once it had, all worked as expected. This was the advice on the Wickr website too actually.

This time however I’ve tried the Stable, Candidate, Beta and Edge versions and all are resulting in the application not loading and a “Aborted (Core Dumped” error. I’ve tried installing each of these via the Snap Store and via the terminal. I’ve tried allowing all permissions too, but this also makes no difference.

Any help would be appreciated!

Here’s the full output from starting Wickrme from the terminal after a fresh install (before fiddling with any permissions)

Aborted (core dumped)

Have you tried filing a bug on their support page?

They don’t really seem to have a support page as such, but I’ll fire off an email to them later.

I just thought I’d post here as it’s often quicker to resolve these things if others have also experienced the same issue!

the snap info ... output points to:

https://support.wickr.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Just a quick update on this. I am still unable to open Wickr. I contacted their support and they advised this:

The following command may help with this issue.

mv ~/.cache/{fontconfig,old.fontconfig}

Please try launching Wickr again after running that command.

This had no effect whatsoever unfortunately, but I thought I should add it here in case it helps someone else with a similar issue.

My last contact with Wickr was they said they’ll ask the developers to “take a look”.
So far I’ve tried the Beta, Candidate and Stable versions, each one installed from the Snap Store and via terminal and get the same Core Dumped error each time. I’ve even completely removed and re-installed snapd… and then installed Wickr again, but no luck.

Ok, apologies for jumping back on this thread twice after a long delay but I’ve only really had time to fiddle with this stuff again very recently.

So… searching around forums for this particular problem with Wickr I found a thread (may have been on this forum) where somebody replied to the OP and asked if they were using proprietary graphics drivers. The OP didn’t say if they were or not, but it got me thinking.

My laptop has an Nvidia 9400 GPU and I’ve been using the proprietary driver from Nvidia because the open source Nouveau driver does not work well with my system for some reason (constant system freezes for example)… so I switched my graphics driver back to the open source Nouveau driver, restarted, and … Wickrme opened fine and I was able to create an account.

Unfortunately, a few seconds later my system froze due to the ongoing issue with the Nouveau driver so I had to switch back to the proprietary Nvidia driver to be able to get any work done.

With the Nvidia driver in use, trying to start Wickrme results in that same Aborted (Core Dumped) error.

So… while I am still effectively not able to use Wickrme (as I cannot use the open source graphics driver), I have at least found out what the root of the problem might be - that there appears to be some kind of incompatibility with Wickr and Nvidia 340 drivers on Linux.

I’d be grateful if someone cleverer than me could let me know what they think!
