Thunderbird Snap Requests & Questions

Hey folks. I have some thoughts/requests/confusions about the Thunderbird snap. This is related to a larger discussion regarding Thunderbird that I’m trying to have over on the Ubuntu Community Hub. You can find the full thread here or the specific section about the snap here.

  1. The rollout of versions across the available channels is confusing to me. The latest channels don’t have the latest version. They have older ESR versions. The ESR channels do have an ESR version (though it didn’t at first), but they are even newer than latest. It’s not clear what channels to use for what purpose at this point.
  2. The first problem is partially due to the fact that no where does it explain the mapping between Snap channels and Thunderbird releases. In fact, Thunderbird has more than 2 release channels but they aren’t reflected in the snap. Where would one find that info? Maybe in the snap description would be a good place to put this? This is an issue that affects many snaps in my opinion. Sometimes the mapping is obvious, sometimes it isn’t.
  3. As far as I can tell, the Thunderbird Team doesn’t maintain the snap. The Snap Store page says it is Canonical. Yet the contact link points to Thunderbird. So does the report bugs URL. There’s no obvious way to report issues to Canonical when something is wrong with the snap.
  4. The versions between the amd64 snap and arm64 snap never match up. I get that sometimes builds fail, but I would imagine eventually things will line up again. This hasn’t happened yet.
  5. The channel I was on went backward in versions. Looks like someone else noticed this too: Request 'monthly' track for Thunderbird - #2 by DeronJ
