Snapd 2.68.4 Release Update

Dear Snapd Community,

We’re pleased to share that the release process for snapd 2.68.4 is progressing well. While the overall 2.68 release has taken a significant time to stabilize, we’re confident that this version will see it through to a successful rollout. This update was prompted by a mistake in classic 24.XX models that required a workaround in snapd, and it is now available in the candidate channel for testing.

This release includes the exact content of snapd 2.68.3, along with a couple of additional changes:

  • Workaround for classic 24.04/24.10 models that incorrectly specify core22 instead of core24 (LP: #20729871)
  • Updated build dependencies

For a detailed overview of the highlights, changes to experimental features, and implications for Ubuntu Core with Full Disk Encryption, please refer to the Snapd 2.68.3 Release Update.

For the release plan and complete list of changes, please refer to the full release notes.

If you are planning on building Ubuntu Core 24 Images, please read this important notice.

Feel free to provide your test feedback here or directly in Launchpad. To help fast track investigations please provide (1) details about the system, (2) snapd version(s) and (3) steps to reproduce the issue.

The next planned release is 2.69, with the release process having started on 21 April.

We greatly appreciate your contributions and support!

We’ve started the progressive rollout of snapd 2.68.4 to the stable channel. The rollout is currently approximately 28% complete, and we expect it to reach 100% within the next 30 hours.

Building Ubuntu Core 24 Images with snapd 2.68.4 and pc-kernel from 24/stable channel:

Ubuntu Core images built using snapd 2.68.4 together with the 24/stable pc-kernel will not function correctly until the upcoming kernel version 6.8.0-58.60+1 is promoted to the stable channel.

This promotion is scheduled to follow the full rollout of snapd 2.68.4, which is expected to complete within the next 30 hours.

If you plan to build images using ubuntu-image and a model assertion using snapd from stable channel and the kernel from the 24/stable channel, you will have to wait until the promotion of kernel version 6.8.0-58.60+1.

Already installed systems will work as expected.
