Signal on Raspberry Pi

Hello I am brand new to this forum and discovered it while trying to install Signal Desktop on my Raspberry pi. It sort of worked but not really. I used sudo snap install --edge signal-desktop, but when I go to run it I get all of this mess: pi@raspberrypi:~ $ signal-desktop

the /etc/ld.so.preload stuff comes from a hack that raspbian ships by default, it should be harmless …

this actually looks like the binary inside the signal snap is an x86 binary … you shoudl open an issue at:

I’m going to work on this today for you. I’ll try to get a working build for the pi, but as upstream don’t supply a binary release for armhf I’ll need to experiment with building it from source. It looks like it had previously been done from source but moved to binary-only supporting amd64 only a while back.

I’ve done a lot of experimentation and analysis over the past 36 hours but haven’t managed to find a way of coercing the signal build to work. It looks like the current Snap version for armhf was released incorrectly, because it isn’t an armhf executable and will not work on a Raspberry Pi. Unfortunately the problems with the build mean that it is not possible to get a working armhf build from the source code as provided by the Signal GitHub repositories, because they include pre-compiled binaries for some dependencies which we cannot easily rebuild for arm without their involvement.

@popey, @Wimpress or @Igor could one of you close the edge channel of signal-desktop, to unpublish the current revisions, and reopen with just the amd64 release, please, because that is the only one that is working. (I would do this myself, but it looks like I didn’t acquire collaborator status on that particular snapcrafters snap when Popey went through granting my permissions ages back)
