Any idea when LibreOffice 25.2 will be available as a snap? I am a dedicated user of snaps in general, but certainly also of LibreOffice. What I hear about the new version is that it does not only resolve a number of bugs, but that it contains interesting new features, e.g. regarding change tracking and the navigator.
I repeat my request for a quick update of the LibreOffice snap towards the 25.2 version. I donāt understand why it takes so long before snap users can have the newest version available, while it was published by th Document Foundation at the beginning of February and was also made available as Flatpak weeks ago.
I have always been a happy user of snaps and I have always defended this format against the many (unfair) criticisms, but to have and gain credibility we must make sure that fundamental apps such as LibreOffice are being updated as soon as possible in order to guarantee snap users the newest and best functionality. The big benefit of snaps (and other sandboxing formats), at least from a user point of view, is exactly that you can guarantee a stable OS and at the same time work with the latest versions of (at least the most important and crucial) applications. I must also admit that I am a bit disappointed that nobody from the development team answered my post of 17 February. I had at least expected some sort of planning information. I hope of course to receive some sort of indication now.
Could anyone involved in the building of the LibreOffice snap please answer my request and give an indication when the new version of LibreOffice (25.2.x) will be available as a snap package?
Is there anybody home? I mean from the development team.
Iām sorry for the lack of response. There are unfortunately too many places where such issues can be raised (this being of course one valid option), Iām for one am not subscribed to new issues in the Snapcraft forum.
Iām preparing a merge request for updating the Libreoffice snap and will ask for review once a build succeeds.
Thanks for this response. If I understand it well, the preparation for the update of LibreOffice has started or will start soon. I feel reassured now.
Thatās correct.
My build finished normally so I requested a review for the merge request.
First of all thanks for your reaction, which I appreciate a lot. If I understand you well, the preparation for the update of LibreOffice has started or will start soon. I have installed the snap using the latest/candidate channel. I will certainly use it and try it and report on possible problems (if any).
I feel quite reassured now. It was even my intention to substitute the snap version with Flatpak, even if I prefer snaps as a matter of principle.
Are there problems? It seems to take quite a bit of time before users can install the new version⦠Any idea when this will be the case?
Is there any problem with this build and the merge request? I was quite astonished and very disappointed to see that the recent update for LibreOffice (8 May) was an update to 24.8.7.2 and not to 25.2.3. The 24.8.7.2 update is the last one of this version. On social media the Document Foundation urges users to upgrade to the newest stable branch. See attachtment.
There was indeed a problem with it, namely that it updated the version number but still downloaded the older tarball.
A build with a correct tarball fails. Iāve gone through the failures today, one of which results in ZLib pkgconfig is in SDK, but not the library Ā· Issue #305 Ā· ubuntu/gnome-sdk Ā· GitHub. Iām trying to work-around the latter one but I canāt know if it is the last.
Last week the maintainer of the Libreoffice snap said he was also working on the update too.
Thanks for your immediate reply. Sad to hear that there is a problem. I hope you will be able to work around it, with of without assistance of others who are involved in the maintenance of LibreOffice. Iāll keep looking forward to it. Good luck!
Hi @JohanVH, the Libreoffice build put up a tough fight but I finally managed to fix it (merge request). I also gave the snap a quick run, which surfaced no run-time issues, except that the launchers are messed up in that they have no icon and the name is generic āLibreoffice 25.2ā. But that should take little time to fix.
Thanks for this update. I canāt wait to see it appear in the snap store channels. And to start using it, of course!
My pleasure! Itās now available in the beta channel.
I have installed it! The app (writer, calc, impress) itself seems to work fine. But there still seem to be some important errors concerning certain functions. The most important one that I have experienced up to now is that the F1 function does not work. Normally F1 should open the Help menu, but it causes the app as such to close down completely!
I have experienced also some problems with the settings, especially with the menu under āUiterlijkā (Dutch for āappearanceā), i.e. choices of colours and other preferences for the lay-out and appearance of the app. These problems could be unrelated to the SNAP as such, since I noticed that this part of the options menu differs a lot and is much more detailed as compared to previous versions.
I will continue to use it, but Iāll be on holiday the next few weeks, which means that my experience with the new version will normally be quite limited the next few weeks.
Best regards,
Thanks for the giving it a go and providing feedback. I opened Bug #2112180 ā[snap] Libreoffice 25.2 crashes when opening helpā : Bugs : libreoffice package : Ubuntu to track the crash.
You may want to file a bug yourself for the appearance settings once you have time.
Enjoy the holidays!
