It woulb be nice, if the download count is available trough a API to use it with badgets (e.g. https://shields.io)

+1 to this. I think I can implement it in Shields repo.
I have found this API. It has many endpoints which are confusing and documentations lack. If anyone gives me an example, I can go from there.
