I’m not a lawyer.

Sure, the content over on the sites you mention may well be protected by copyright. I doubt we are in breach of anything there, because we’re not using any of that content in our product, website or other assets.

I suspect you mean Trademark, when you say Copyright. In which case, the term “snapcraft” is trademarked by Canonical in the UK, and possibly other locations.

Also not a lawyer but to add on to Popeys answer, trademark law generally is understanding when two unrelated projects have the same name provided they’re not occupying the same market niche. The link Popey provided specifically mentions registered classes that Canonicals Snapcraft holds, but the Minecraft community would presumably not occupy the same classes.

As a general test, if two names being similar would cause confusion to users, then it’s in the concern of Trademark law, but the Snapcraft Minecraft community is doing different things than the Snapcraft Linux community where it’s unreasonable to expect any serious confusion between the two.

It is however a pretty complex system where you can never be 100% assured of something unless proven in court, for example, a trademark doesn’t necessarily have to be registered to count as a trademark, although it becomes much harder to enforce; unregistered trademarks can still count as valid trademarks and hold legal relevancy.

Overall, there’s a reasonable assumption that the Minecraft community is fine and Canonical is not in the business of excessive litigation, similarly, the Linux community is probably fine as the Minecraft community doesn’t present much cause for concern to Canonical neither.

Not a lawyer, but as long as the two entities aren’t in the same industry in the same nation that shouldn’t be much a problem.
