Auto-connect "audio-record" request, for 1st Money

Hi there! Can the audio-record interface be auto-connected for the 1st Money snap?

1st Money provides payroll and HR software for companies of any size.

Recently we added a very prominent AI powered microphone for users to vocally ask questions and get fast answers in the form of help videos.

We expect all our users will be using the AI powered microphone regularly, especially new users who’ll be asking questions into the microphone to learn our software.

With this in mind, we’ve made it big, red, and the foremost feature of our software:

See it in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jz_za31gjDA

We’re all very impressed by the quality of the answers, and we think the wow factor of this AI powered microphone will be the way we manage to push into the existing UK payroll market.

Not to mention, we’re currently improving the AI powered microphone to answer an even more diverse range of questions tailored to their specific payroll situation.

Here’s how we handle the audio input:

  • Audio input is never stored or recorded.
  • What the user speaks is converted to text in real-time, then shown in a popup on-screen.
  • Using the spoken text, we use AI to find the best matching video.

I’d imagine most of our users wouldn’t be tech-savvy enough to manually connect the audio-record interface anyway.

If you’ve got any questions, or need more information about this request, please let me know.

Thanks!

Given the functionality of the snap I believe it makes sense for the audio-record interface to be connected manually, however, I have yet to be convinced that the auto-connection is legit for this functionality.

Hi there @sahnaseredini ,

Could you help me understand your reluctance to auto-connect the audio-record interface for 1st Money?

It would be very convenient to all our users if the AI powered microphone worked out of the box.

Also, I didn’t mention this in the original post, but the AI powered microphone is the first item in the right-click menu, and second item in the tray icon menu:

Hello @1st-money,

One of the reasons for the long deliberation on this is that there are many viewpoints that we like to consider when granting access to devices like the microphone, and one of those viewpoints is that of the privacy sensitive user. I ask myself ‘would a user reasonably expect this application to have access to the device’s microphone’, initially (like @sahnaseredini) I wouldn’t have expected so (by virtual of it’s primary function being a finance/payroll application).

For 1st Money though, the audio help functionality features prominently in the apps description. It is also an application that I anticipate will be installed primarily by users already familiar with the 1st Money platform who would expect this functionality.

For these reasons I vote +1 for the auto-connection of audio-record for 1st Money.

+1 from me too - I also agree that for users of this snap they likely would not be surprised by this functionality (even if say for other similar snaps this may be the case in general).

+2 votes for, -1 against, granting auto-connect of audio-record for 1st Money snap. This is now live.
