$SNAP_USER_DATA/../current, but no $SNAP_USER_DATA?

Check this out:

$ sudo snap install spongeshaker_0_amd64.snap --dangerous
spongeshaker 0 installed
$ ls -l ~/snap/spongeshaker/
total 4
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kyrofa kyrofa 2 Sep  6 07:40 current -> x1

After I install the snap, I get a current symlink pointing to $SNAP_USER_DATA (ending in x1), but the x1 dir doesn’t actually exist, so the symlink is broken. Okay, so now I run an app:

$ spongeshaker.sha3sum
<snip>
$ ls -l ~/snap/spongeshaker/
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 kyrofa kyrofa 4096 Sep  6 15:08 common
lrwxrwxrwx 1 kyrofa kyrofa    2 Sep  6 07:40 current -> x1
drwxr-xr-x 2 kyrofa kyrofa 4096 Sep  6 15:08 x1

And NOW I have $SNAP_USER_DATA as well as $SNAP_USER_COMMON. The fact that the broken symlink is created upon install is odd, no?
