the default icons of some gnome applications are not visible and only display them as a file (a sheet)
this happens with gnome contacts, evince and characters
I think this is due to upstream changing icon names from gnome-contacts to org.gnome.Contacts, which is not provided by the theme in 16.04. I think the only way to reliably provide application icons is to use the bundled icon rather than the themed icon, however people complained about the lack of themed icons when we did that.

I personally believe bundled icon is the way to go, we can’t guarantee the themed icon will exist anyway.
@kenvandine If Canonical were to release, in an update, a DEB with symbolic links to map up the old and new filenames would this solve the problem?
