Name dispute + classic confinement for vcr snap

Hello,

I’m one of the owners of the internal Canonical tool VCR: GitHub - canonical/vcr: Virtual Course Recorder · GitHub

We tried registering the name and it seems it’s already been taken but unused, I’m not sure by who.

A name dispute has been created through the dashboard.

The snap requires classic confinement, since it’s a tool for generating video courses, including gifs and videos created by recording shell commands not known at build time.

Thanks in advance,

Enrico

Not a reviewer, however, you should take a look at Reviewing classic confinement snaps - Snap documentation since the given rationale doesn’t seem to be in any of the supported categories of classic confinement.

Yes, I did review the classic confinement doc. Thanks for the double-check

The argument here is that this tool records courses automatically from a combination of markdown files and scripts given by the course author (juju commands, kubectl, docker, lxd, ecc.).

The content is unknown at build time, so under strict confinement they would all inherit the sandbox and fail.

After discussion with the snap team, I’ll avoid having this 3-letter snap name and instead I’ll create the “video-course-recorder” snap and request auto-alias to vcr
