Logging stdout during cleanbuild

Is there a way to print log messages during a snapcraft cleanbuild?

I am trying to understand why my application.desktop file isn’t working and I think I am pointing it to the wrong path. It would be nice to have a way to print messages to the console when building the snap package to better understand / learn what’s going on. Make already does this for example, it prints it’s output to my console, they one where I rand snapcraft cleanbuild from.

In other words: why does this not show the path in my console?

 override-build: |
    snapcraftctl build
    echo "Currently in $PWD"

I am probably missing something very basic here…

I found a possible solution: pipe the output to stderr like this:

echo "Currently in $PWD" 1>&2

Not sure that’s the recommended way of doing this.
