When you install snapd from your distribution, things should be arranged so that the directory where it puts binaries from snaps is on your $PATH. Usually you need to restart your session for whatever mechanism to be effective though (in some distributions, just starting a new shell is enough). So if you get “command not found” when trying to run a snap’s apps from the terminal, the simplest thing you should first try is to log out and back in, or reboot.
If that doesn’t fix it, please let us know: tell us your combination of snapd (the output of snap version), distribution (the contents of /etc/os-release), GUI desktop if any, and your shell. We should then be able to tell you how to get things working, first, and we can then look into making sure it works for everybody automatically, second.

Turns out the recently installed FISH shell was the issue. Switching back to BASH fixed it for me. It also fixed an unmentioned issue where installing a Snap app with the error would not create the corresponding shortcut in Gnome.
I suppose adding the missing PATH to my FISH exports might work too. But I coudln’t find a clear cut way of doing that. Those of you experiencing this issue might want to look at your shells.

when I perform
sudo snap install packagename
However, when I use
snap install packagename
gnome asks me to authenticate (as opposed to through the terminal), and it works with no errors. I only get this error when running snap install as root. Although, I haven’t noticed any issues even when this error is returned.
