I still don’t understand this reasoning. If the idea is for the version
string to be user friendly, we should be encouraging version text like “This version allows you to install mods from moddb but doesn’t include the hi-res textures” rather than “1.0.1”. There isn’t any compelling reason to limit the number of characters in this field. If it helps a user to communicate the precise version with upstream in a bug report, shouldn’t that be encouraged even if it is ugly?
