Complaint regarding a package that violates copyright and licenses

Hello Snap Store team,

I would like to report Paint Linux as a copyright and license violation.

Original project: Snap: https://snapcraft.io/paint (It tells me that new users can only post 2 links, so just go to my app page and there are links to the program’s source code)

Reported package: https://snapcraft.io/paint-linux

The reported package is a rebranded copy of my application with only minor changes. My project is dual-licensed under MIT and GPL-3.0.

The publisher appears to violate both licenses by:

distributing a modified version without providing the corresponding source code (GPL-3.0);

removing the required copyright/license notices and not crediting the original author (MIT).

I am the original author of this project and request that this package be investigated and removed if these violations are confirmed.

Thank you.

This request has not been added to the review queue. It should be placed in the appropriate store-requests subcategory using the subcategory template for classic-confinement, privileged-interfaces and aliases requests.

You should use the “Report a Snap Store violation” on the store page of the respective snap for such issues (this has a proper form which will submit the request to the right people) …

I’ve already filed a complaint twice, and no one has responded, even though quite a bit of time has passed.

Hi dvytvs-1, I’m part of the Store team and I’m now looking into this. While I think this case is relatively clear cut, we need to work with our legal team to ensure the right people sign off on these decisions and the steps we take are appropriate.

Apologies for the time taken with your report. I expect we will be able to take action by the end of the week.

Okay, thank you. I’ll wait for a response and hope this app is removed for license violation.

@dvytvs-1 we have initiated a copyright claim take down request with the publisher of paint-linux and removed the snap, we have granted them the opportunity to file a rebuttal, and will keep you informed if there is any further action.

Thank you for your involvement and contributions to the snap ecosystem,

Regards, Barrett

Thank you! You did a great job!
