Classic confinement request for mustatil

Hello Snap Store reviewers,

I would like to request classic confinement for the snap `mustatil`.

Mustatil is a desktop GIS / AI vision workspace for annotation, YOLO training, large-image and geospatial detection, web-map viewing, GPKG/GIS export, and graphical AI pipeline building.

The snap currently uses classic confinement because Mustatil works as a launcher and runtime manager for a Conda-based Python desktop application. It needs to:

  • create and manage a user-local Conda/Miniforge environment
  • install and update Python packages and AI/GIS dependencies at runtime
  • launch external Conda/Python binaries and model runtimes
  • access user-selected datasets, GeoTIFFs, image folders, model files, training folders, exports, and GIS project files
  • support large local files and user-controlled project directories outside the snap sandbox
  • run desktop GUI workflows for model training, detection, annotation, and GIS export

Strict confinement is currently not sufficient because the application needs broad user-selected filesystem access and runtime dependency management for AI/GIS workflows. The application is similar in behavior to a developer/scientific tool that launches and manages external runtimes and user projects.

The uploaded snap is:

Snap name: mustatil Version: 1.0.1 Channel attempted: edge Confinement: classic

The automatic review failed with:

(NEEDS REVIEW) confinement ‘classic’ not allowed.

Please review this request and enable classic confinement for the `mustatil` snap.

Thank you.

Hello @twasfy,

While it seems plausible that there are technical reasons why mustatil needs classic for its core utility, please note that classic confinement is a sensitive matter and it is reserved for mature, well-known applications published by mature, well-known entities. Would you be able to provide any evidence that this is the case for mustatil?

Thanks!

Hi, is the Microsoft Store enough? Kind regards Tarek Wasfy

Hello,

I was able to find the package on the Microsoft Store as well as PyPi. I do believe this snap falls under the supported category of tools for local, non-root user driven configuration of development environments, and some of the technical reasoning for classic is sound (a combination of home, removable-media, and any necessary personal-files interfaces should be sufficient for dataset and file access in this case). That being said, as of today I do not believe that mustafil meets the criteria for classic for the following reasons:

  • The project seems to be very fresh, according to the upstream repository
  • I could not find evidences that the project has a strong enough user base currently

Taking these factors into account, I think mustafil should not currently be granted classic confinement. However, I would encourage you to make another request once the application matures and gains community traction.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.
