Support for Candid authentication is being removed in Snapcraft 9.1. Only the default authentication option, Ubuntu One, will be supported.
Existing credentials that were created with Candid will no longer work and will need to be recreated. Credentials can be used locally, or exported for use elsewhere (often in CI), where they’re stored in the SNAPCRAFT_STORE_CREDENTIALS environment variable.
Do I have Candid credentials?
For local authentication, the easiest way to check is to update Snapcraft to 9.1.1 or higher and try snapcraft whoami. If you’re using Candid credentials, Snapcraft will produce an error and recommend how to recreate your credentials.
For CI workflows, the easiest way to check credentials is the environment variable SNAPCRAFT_STORE_AUTH=candid. If you have this set, then you have Candid credentials. Otherwise, you have Ubuntu One credentials.
How to recreate credentials
For local usage, new credentials are created by running snapcraft logout and snapcraft login.
For exported credentials, new credentials are created by running snapcraft export-login.
Release schedule
Snapcraft 9.1.1 is currently available in the latest/candidate and 9.x/candidate channels. It’s scheduled to be promoted to the stable channels on 2026-09-21. Candid authentication will stop working on this date for anyone using a stable release of Snapcraft.
See Call for testing: Snapcraft 9.1 for updates on the release schedule.
